New York Assembly’s Judiciary Committee Hires Law Firm to Investigate Gov. Cuomo

By Yehudit Garmaise

New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine, who chairs the Judiciary Committee that has launched an investigation into the seven harassment allegations against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced that the Assembly has hired law firm Davis, Polk, and Wardwell to lead the inquiry that could be the first step toward impeaching the governor.

Politico reported yesterday that a lawyer for one of the governor’s accusers has said that even more harassment allegations exist, although those who bring them have not yet come forward publicly.

Debra Katz, a lawyer who represents one of the governor’s accusers, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that she had been contacted by others who had experiences of harassment similar to those of her client, Politico reported.

The many allegations against Gov. Cuomo have “clear patterns” and “clear abuses of powers,” Katz said.

Despite the many calls for the governor to resign by scores of legislators, including State Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) and Sen. Kristin Gillibrand (D), the governor has repeatedly said that he will not step down.

Other top lawmakers, such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Joe Biden have stopped short of calling for the governor’s resignation and said the two investigations being conducted by both New York Attorney General Letitia James and the Judiciary Committee should be completed.

President Joe Biden, however, is stepping into dangerous ground, as a few harassment allegations have been launched against him over the years.

In addition, in 1991, when Joe Biden was the chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, infamously decimated law professor Anita Hill when she reluctantly reported harassment allegations of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearings.

Fearing that his past behavior toward Anita Hill was going to pose problems during his presidential run, which it didn’t because most Democrats ignored it, in April 2019, the New York Times reported that Biden “reached out to her…and arranged a telephone call” to express his “regret for what she endured” 28 years previous, although Hill wasn’t impressed and wouldn’t even call the phone call an apology.
