New Public Restrooms Coming To NYC

By Idy Perl

Anyone who ever needed a restroom in the City knows the struggle of finding a public restroom in the city. New Yorkers have long complained about the issue, with many being forced to purchase an item in a store in order to be able to use a shop’s restroom.

Today Mayor Adams announced the new initiative, which is an effort to expand access to public restrooms across the five boroughs. Over the next five years the Department of Parks and Recreation will be renovating 36 existing bathrooms and adding an additional 46 new ones to the 1,000 public restrooms in NYC.

In addition, finding a public bathroom will get easier this summer as a new Google Maps feature will help residents locate the nearest public restroom.

“Part of making New York City a more livable city is tackling the little things — the things we don’t think about until we need them,” said Mayor Adams. “Access to public restrooms is high on that list… we’ve already added changing tables to all NYC Parks public restrooms where it’s feasible — three years ahead of schedule. The new and renovated bathrooms we’ll deliver over the next five years will make it easier for New Yorkers to embrace the best parts of this city: our shared outdoors spaces.”
