New NYC Litter Bins At Risk Due To Proposed Tariffs

By Idy Perl
Mayor Adams recently announced that the classic green litter bins around NYC will be replaced by a fleet of 23,000 new, modern litter baskets to reduce public littering. The futuristic bins are easier for sanitation workers to lift and empty and, most importantly, are harder for rats and rodents to get into.
Unfortunately, the bins might be one of the casualties of President Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian imports, as the bins are manufactured in Canada for $1,000 each. If Trump’s follows through with his 25% tariff on Canadian imports, that price would rise dramatically.
“New Yorkers and our sanitation workers love them, as they are rat-resistant, leakproof, harder to misuse with household trash, and both easier and safer for sanitation workers to empty,” sanitation spokesperson Joshua Goodman said. “At this point, any tariff or associated change in the delivery schedule remains a hypothetical, but we are watching the situation closely.”
