New DSNY Trash Bins Arriving in Boro Park

By Y.M. Lowy

As you walk through Boro Park, you’ll notice the new official NYC Bins lining the streets, part of the city’s effort to improve cleanliness and reduce the rat population.

Since November 12, 2024, all residential buildings with 1 to 9 units must use trash bins that are 55 gallons or less with secure lids. These bins must be used for trash set out for collection. The city recently began enforcing these rules. If you don’t follow them, you might have to pay a fine starting at $50 for the first time, with higher fines for more violations. While residents can use any compliant bin for now, by June 1, 2026, everyone will be required to use the official NYC Bin.

The official NYC Bin is available for purchase at a subsidized price, making it a cost-effective option for residents. The price can vary based on the size of the bin, and it’s available for a fraction of the cost of similar bins at retail stores. You can purchase the bins on the city’s website or call 1-855-NYC-BINS to place an order by phone. For those who prefer to shop in person, Home Depot locations throughout New York City have the official NYC Bins in stock.
