New Area Code Proposed for Parts of NYC

By BoroPark24 Staff
New York City might soon get a new area code, as officials work to ensure enough phone numbers for the growing population.
The new area code, which has yet to be decided, would apply to new numbers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Marble Hill in Manhattan.
Existing phone numbers in the 347, 718, 917, and 929 area codes won’t be affected, meaning current customers can keep their numbers. The change would only impact new phone lines going forward.
The proposal comes from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), the organization in charge of managing phone numbers in the U.S. They warn that the current pool of numbers for the 347/718/917/929 area codes is expected to run out by the end of 2026.
If approved, the new area code would be rolled out six months before the current numbers are projected to be exhausted. Stay tuned for updates as this proposal moves forward.
