Nearly Half of Total Hate Crimes in NYC in 2020 were Perpetrated Against Jews

Crimes that were motivated by anti-Semitism accounted for nearly half of the total number hate crimes that were committed in New York City in 2020, according to a NYPD Hate Crime Task Force report that was obtained by BoroPark.

The total number of hate crimes citywide that took place between Jan. 1 and Dec. 27, 2020, was 264, with a shocking 118 of those crimes being carried out against Jews.

Criminals targeted hate crimes at 25 people who were associated with coronavirus, although only three hate crimes were recorded to be directed at Asians in particular.

In October, the NYPD formed an Asian Hate Crime Task Force, which was its first-ever task force that is dedicated to investigating crimes targeting a single race.

The city has seen a rise in hate crimes directed at Asian people since the coronavirus pandemic began, the NYPD said at the time.

Staffed by 25 detectives of Asian descent who speak a combined nine Asian languages, the group of officers guides Asian victims of hate crimes through the justice system, from reporting a crime all the way to prosecution, and the task force will remain after the pandemic, the NYPD said.

The NYPD only recorded four hate crimes against Muslims in New York City this year, and one hate crime was directed against a Hispanic person.
