Natural Gas Detectors Now Required in NYC Buildings

C.G. Hoffman

NYC buildings now have new safety regulations to contend with. The DOB published a final rule implementing changes passed by the City Council in 2016, requiring natural gas detectors to be installed in all apartment buildings, hotels, and smaller residential properties that are not owner-occupied.

The ruling was implemented after numerous fatal gas explosions in the city. The measure is expected to improve early detection of gas leaks, both for safety and to prevent the escape of methane gas which is destructive to the environment. The detectors should be installed at least 3 feet away, but not more than 10 feet away, from gas appliances in order to prevent false alarms.

The ruling could impact as much as 90% of buildings citywide. The deadline for property owners to install the natural gas detectors is May 1, 2025.
