National Bike Month: Bike Safety Tips

By Idy Perl

May is National Bike Month, the month to celebrate everyone’s favorite outdoor activity as the weather outside gets warmer.

Although bike riding is fun and a great form of exercise, it’s also important to remember to be safe on the road!

Always wear a helmet, even if it’s uncomfortable or doesn’t look very cool. Helmets should fit snugly and are a foolproof way to protect your head in case of a fall or accident.

Make sure you feel comfortable on your bike; don’t ride a bike that’s too big or too small.

Before heading out check that your tires, brakes, and handlebars are working properly.

Assume that drivers can’t see you. Double and triple check before crossing the road to make sure the road is clear.

Always follow street signs and rules.

Drive with the flow, in the same direction as traffic.

Don’t distract yourself with texting or music that can cause loosing control or causing an accident.
