MTA Splits Verrazzano Bridge Tolls Into One for Each Direction

New York – Drivers will no longer be required to pay for both directions on the Verrazzano Bridge when they only travel one way.

The MTA on Wednesday approved a plan to split the one-way toll on the span connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island, charging drivers just $6.12 for each direction instead of $12 for E-ZPass users.

For Staten Island residents who take three or more trips a month it wll cost them $3.44 per direction. For Staten Island residents who take fewer than three trips a month it will be $3.63 a trip.
The new fares go into effect at the end of the year.

For those who pay cash, the $19 toll is the most expensive in the United States.

Local politicians have been urging the board for months to split the tolling, arguing that many drivers avoid the toll altogether by entering Staten Island through New Jersey before crossing into Brooklyn.
