Drivers heading out to Staten Island today should remember to pay their tolls.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Bridge and Tunnel officers set a new record within Wednesday’s 24 hours when they not only stopped 29 repeated toll-evaders, but seized and impounded their cars," the MTA told 1010 WINS.
Of the 29 scofflaws, 17 of the drivers caught for “continuous toll-evasion” while crossing Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, were allowed to continue on: but without their cars.
In total, the 17 drivers who were busted on the bridge had accrued a bill of $420,000 in unpaid tolls and late fees.
Just one driver owes nearly $60,000.
In addition to the drivers who were stopped on the Verrazzano Bridge, MTA officers stopped 12 additional drivers at area crossings, where their vehicles were seized.
