MTA Says: No Bus or Subway Fare Hikes Until 2022

Although the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) planned to raise bus and subway fares later in 2021, the MTA has again delayed its fare hikes through at least 2022, MTA agency officials said today.

"There's not going to be a fare hike, period,” insisted Larry Schwartz, who is the MTA’s finance chairman after a monthly committee meeting.

MTA Communications Director Tim Minton also told News 4 New York that the city's riders of buses and subways will not see a price hike until 2022, at the earliest.

The MTA’s welcome news comes as New Yorkers continue to return to public transit after mostly staying away during the pandemic, also the MTA reports that subway ridership remains 50% lower than before COVID hit, due to fear of subway crime, the transmission of the virus, or perhaps less of a willingness to move around the city, as many New Yorkers stay closer to home after a year and a half of the pandemic.
