MTA Rolls Out OMNY Cards For Students

By Idy Perl
The MTA announced that starting this September, all NYC students will receive an OMNY (One Metro NY) card instead of Metrocards.
This change is part of an ongoing effort to streamline MTA payments and expand contactless payment options for riders who use Reduced-Fare, Fair Fares, Access-a-Ride and pre-tax commuter benefits. OMNY vending machines, which let you reload your card and check your balance, have been rolling out in various train stations as well.
“Billions of taps prove that OMNY is the most cost-effective and easy way to pay your fare,” MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara says. “We have created a clear path towards a major expansion of OMNY this year to millions more customers including all New York City school students by the start of this upcoming 2024-2025 school year and more.”
