MTA Removes Bus Drivers Who Fought Over Right of Way

By Yehudit Garmaise

The MTA has temporarily relieved two B35 bus drivers of their duties so that the agency can investigate yesterday’s traffic jam that blocked 13th Avenue for anywhere between 12 to 60 minutes, according to different reports.

The investigation into the drivers’ behavior will probe the drivers’ operations of the buses, their conduct, and their failure to wear masks, said the MTA, which also pointed out that a parked minivan and a shipping container were illegally parked and “were a significant cause of the gridlock.”

Yesterday, standoff began, witnesses told the New York Post, after one of the buses ran out of room after attempting to turn right. While half of his bus remained in the intersection at 13th Avenue and 39th Street, the other bus stopped at a red light, but then could not pass when the light turned green.

After neither driver would allow back up or allow the other to pass, pedestrians tried to help the unyielding bus drivers by offering to help them to back up.

“Can you back up a little bit?” one helpful Yid asked the bus driver. “I’ll help you back up, otherwise we are going to stay here all day.”

Although pedestrians pointed out that the bus that was headed straight could have easily backed up, he just would not relent.

“It’s ridiculous,” the pedestrian said. “Just ask him to back up. He can do it in a minute.”

Neither bus driver would budge, until one of the bus's passengers, who happened to be a bus driver himself, jumped out of the bus to direct other the surrounding cars to back up, so that both vehicles could continue on their merry ways.
