MTA Implements Truck Ban on Bridges Due to High Winds

In response to anticipated severe weather conditions, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced a temporary ban on certain trucks using major New York City bridges. The restriction is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1, and will remain in effect until 10 p.m. on Thursday, January 2. The bridges affected are the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Cross Bay Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of motorists and workers, as high winds can pose significant risks, particularly for larger vehicles. Trucks falling within the restricted categories will be rerouted during this period.

Mayor Eric Adams has also issued a statement regarding the severe weather:

“Our teams are keeping an eye on the potential for severe weather today and tomorrow, specifically heavy rain and strong winds. Be careful when you’re going out and bundle up as temperatures drop in NYC.”
