MTA Aims to Have Cameras in All Train Cars by 2026

The MTA recently conducted a survey which found that riders aboard the subway feel somewhat safer than they did in recent years.
This may have something to do with a new push by the NYPD and the MTA to crack down on crime and help deter crime in New York City’s subways. The NYPD has increased its presence in and around subways, and the MTA is installing cameras inside many subway cars, with a goal to have every subway car outfitted with a camera by the year 2026.
This effort is already proving its worth, as a camera placed inside a subway led to the arrest of a suspect in a shooting at Ralph Avenue this past November.
“Our onboard cameras caught the very first crime on camera a few weeks back, and it led to an arrest,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey.
Davey expressed his hopes that, beyond catching perpetrators after they have committed crimes, these cameras will prevent crime aboard New York City trains.
