Mosquito Spraying in Boro Park

By: C.G. Hoffman
The New York City Health Department has announced that it will be spraying anti-mosquito pesticides in parts of Brooklyn, including some parts of Boro Park. This is in order to reduce the mosquito population and prevent the risk of the West Nile Virus. Trucks will be spraying the pesticides on Tuesday, September 5, between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am the following morning. In case of bad weather, the spraying will commence on the following day, Wednesday, September 6.
The areas to be sprayed include the streets above 60th Street, between Fort Hamilton Parkway and McDonald Avenue.
The Health Department has stated that it will be using very low percentages of the pesticide, which should not pose any risk to the general population. People who are sensitive to spray ingredients, as well as people with respiratory difficulties are advised to use caution, and to try to remain indoors if possible. After spraying, the Health Dept. recommends washing skin and clothes that were exposed to pesticides with soap and water.
In order to prevent the mosquito population from increasing, the most effective way to control mosquitos is to eliminate standing water. Keep your home and family mosquito-free by ensuring that all your home’s windows are protected with well-sealed window screens.
