More Cars Impounded in NYC Ghost Plate Crackdown

Since Boro Park 24 last reported on the city’s crackdown on ghost license plates, the number of impounded vehicles has climbed past 4,000. Multiple law enforcement agencies have conducted over 70 toll enforcement operations since March 2024, leading to 902 arrests and more than 39,000 summonses.
Officials say more than $50 million is owed by toll evaders caught in these operations.
New license plate rules are set to take effect in April. Plastic and glass covers are already banned, but now any coating or grime that could obscure a plate photo will also be prohibited, according to the Department of Transportation.
