Moderna Vaccine Delivery Delayed

Moderna Vaccine Delivery Delayed

A short delay in deliveries from a key pharmaceutical company, Moderna, has forced City Hall to reschedule at least 23,000 appointments for inoculations, officials revealed Wednesday.

The reasons for the delay are not clear, but yesterday, nearly 12,000 doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine were spoiled on their way to Michigan because they got too cold.

On Sunday, the Texas-based distributor, McKesson Corporation, sent 11,900 doses that were deemed unusable after falling below the federally recommended range of minus 13 degrees to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Officials said yesterday that the New Yorkers who had vaccination appointments between today and Jan. 24 at one of the city Health Department’s 15 vaccination ‘hubs’ will be offered new appointments via emails within a week, but only if the city ships more doses of the vaccine.

Appointments made through the city’s public hospital system have not been affected yet, officials added.

That news came as Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a bleak warning from the state Capitol in Albany that the federal supply problems were hitting the entire state — and meant it could be seven months before shots are available to the general public.

The vaccine shortage has already set up a roadblock in the city’s efforts to inoculate New Yorkers who have been prioritized for vaccination: healthcare workers, police officers, firefighters, teachers, and New Yorkers who are 65 and older.

“We already were feeling the stress of a shortage of vaccine, now the situation has been made even worse” by the Moderna delays, Mayor de Blasio said.

Yesterday, Gov. Cuomo, said limited vaccine supply is the state’s biggest challenge to inoculating everyone in the state.

“At this rate, we only have 2 or 3 days of supply,” Cuomo told reporters. “What’s clear now is that we are going to be going week to week.”

“I urge President Biden to increase the supply to states as soon as possible.”
