Today on Taanis Esther, Mayor Bill de Blasio took time out of his morning press conference not only to wish the Jewish community a Happy Purim, but to thank Hatzalah for being community leaders who focus on healthcare and “keeping people safe.”
“Today is the celebration of Purim,” Mayor de Blasio said this morning under a slide of cheerful-looking hamantaschen. “I want to make sure that folks know as we celebrate, this is a wonderful, joyous holiday in the Jewish community.”
“The mayor said that Purim “is all about a celebration of life” and “a joyous time.
[“Purim] is a time to focus on the deliverance from evil.”
While the mayor said that “of course people can and should celebrate Purim,” he said that everyone should celebrate safely, as COVID and new COVID variants still loom in New York City.
In particular, Mayor de Blasio urged that celebrants consider having smaller Purim bashes this year.
Instead of having “the big gatherings that are typical,” the mayor said that New Yorkers should “be smart about how big the size of the[ir] groups are, [and] be safe about staying close to family members.”
“Happy Purim to everyone. Let’s keep people safe.”
