Mayor de Blasio Says Vaccination Process Going Faster, but the Supply is Running Out

By Yehudit Garmaise

Mayor Bill de Blasio said that while New York City inoculates people faster and faster, the supply of the vaccine is running out.

“We need [more vaccines] desperately,” said the mayor, who told reporters this morning that while he set a public goal to vaccinate 175,000 New Yorkers last week, the city surpassed that goal on Sunday, when it provided more than 220,000 vaccinations.

“Every three seconds a New Yorker got vaccinated, as of Sunday,” said the mayor proudly, as he adds that as of today, since the beginning of the vaccination effort, 455,737 doses have been given in New York City.

By tomorrow, the mayor hopes to have vaccinated half a million New Yorkers.

“The good news is we have the ability to do this faster and faster,” said the mayor, who for this week, set the goal to vaccinate 300,000: If we have the vaccine we need. “The problem is, we don’t.”

Mayor de Blasio reported that today, the city expects 53,000 vaccine doses, which leaves only 116,000 for the week ahead.

“At the rate, we are going, we will begin to run out on Thursday--two days from now,” the mayor said. “And we will have nothing left to give as of Friday.”

If the city does not get increased doses of the vaccine, the city will have to cancel appointments and no longer give shots after Thursday for the remainder of the week at a lot of our sites, the mayor sadly explained.

The current schedule of vaccine delivery says that New York City will not be resupplied until next Tuesday, which means that many of the city’s sites would not be ready to vaccinate again until next Wednesday.

“This is crazy,” the mayor said. “This is not the way it should be. We have the ability to vaccinate a huge number of people. We need the vaccine to go with it. So, right now, it is up to the federal government, up to the state, up to the manufacturers, to do everything they can to give us the maximum supply because we are proving with every passing day that we can reach more and more people.”
