Mayor de Blasio Aims to Vaccinate New York City 24/7, Double Vaccination Sites

By Yehudit Garmaise

In order to meet his goal of vaccinating one million New Yorkers in January, this morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that he is rapidly ramping up the vaccination efforts in New York City to offer more sites of vaccination, which is becoming a 24/7 project for the city in 2021.

“Vaccinating New Yorkers] has got to be a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour reality going forward,” the mayor said this morning at his press conference. “You are going to see an intensive speed up in the month of January, and of course, beyond.”

“I want to vaccinate educators and school staffs,” the mayor said. “I want to see us vaccinate first responders of all kinds: cops, firefighters across the spectrum.”

Mayor de Blasio said that right now the vaccination process is focused “on our healthcare heroes and on nursing homes,” he said, in January, “we need to reach many more people, quickly, urgently, and it can be done.”

The mayor acknowledged that the vaccine roll-out started out more slowly that New Yorkers had hoped, but he explained that caution, refrigeration issues, and vaccine education and safety were issued that slowed the city down as the vaccine first arrived in the city in December.

Now that some of the kinks have been worked out and more than four million Americans have been safely vaccinated, the mayor explained, the city is launching a plan to double the 125 current vaccination sites, staffed by city’s Health Department staff, other city staff, and the medical reserve corps, in New York City to at least 250 sites by the end of the month.

“We anticipate getting to at least 160 access points by the end of this weekend,” said Dave A. Chokshi, MD, New York City’s commissioner of health.

In addition, starting on Sunday, Health + Hospitals will be opening up pop-up vaccination sites in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan that will be focused on vaccinating thousands of unaffiliated healthcare workers.

The Department of Health also will be using public school buildings as vaccination hubs for our larger communities.

“The new [vaccination] sites, will be ready to welcome newly eligible individuals, such as unaffiliated healthcare providers, who don’t have employer-based access to vaccines,” said Chokshi, who explained that unaffiliated healthcare workers do not just nurses and doctors, but phlebotomists, dentists, physical therapists, coroners, funeral workers, and staff at specialty clinics like dialysis centers.”

In Brooklyn, unaffiliated healthcare workers will be able to make appointments for vaccination at the Bushwick Educational Campus, which is located at 400 Irving Avenue.
