Mayor Bill de Blasio: Shootings "Very Troubling"

When speaking about the city's recent uptick in shootings, Mayor de Blasio said, "In the beginning of the year, we saw an uptick in crime and shootings. We saw some leveling off for a few months in the beginning of the coronavirus crisis. Now, we’ve seen something very troubling in recent weeks."

The "something very troubling" that the Mayor is referring to is 28 shootings over the three-day weekend.

This increase in shootings is not a surprise as there generally is a summer phenomenon of many more shootings. This is something generally addressed by the "Summer All Out" and "Cure Violence" initiatives.

"During the month of May, we are seeing an increase of 25 percent in homicides in the last few days, so it is concerning," said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
