Legal Solution for Cooling Off with Fire Hydrants
All over the city, fire hydrants are being popped open by kids who need to cool off during these scorching hot summer days.
This morning, on 15th avenue and 45th street, a hydrant was set off, forcefully spraying gallons of water across the street making it unsafe for people walking and driving nearby.
To prevent this from happening again, here and in other neighborhoods, NYC is taking advantage of a safer alternative, opening hydrants, but only slightly.
The city’s been distributing spray caps, tops with a few holes for legal hydrant sprinklers, for decades, but is now being reminded of them as incidents like this are taking place all over.
To have a sprinkler cap added to a hydrant near you, anyone 18 or older can request their local firehouse install one.
