Jewish ZIP Codes Receive Eligibility for 3-K, Pre-K Funding, New York City Expands 3-K for All

 By Yehudit Garmaise

After initially being strangely excluded for eligibility for city funding for 3-K and Pre-K, this morning, a miracle in a season of miracles occurred this morning, when the principals of yeshivas in Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods received an email that explained that, as a result, of Mayor Bill de Blasio's initiative to add 16,500 seats for 3-K programs citywide, many more neighborhood children will be able to go to preschool in the Fall.

“I am very happy that among K’lal Yisroel, we will have the funds to hire heimish teachers with degrees,” said a menahel, who remembered that before Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Universal 3-K and Pre-K programs, “no one could pay those salaries.”

“Nursery and kindergarten are the two years that really give children their first impressions of what school is all about,” a Boro Park principal said. “If we put in a lot of effort in these first two years of schooling, we actually save ourselves a lot of regius nefesh and a lot of money later on.”

“We see a huge difference,” said the longtime menahel. “You cannot compare the skill levels, knowledge, development, and capabilities of students who went to early childhood education to those who did not.”

Thankfully, the importance of early childhood education is the thinking of Mayor Bill de Blasio as well, who has long advocated for universal 3-K and Pre-K, and by using funds from the recently signed $1.8 trillion federal stimulus, today announced that in partnership with City Council, the city will further expand 3-K for All to all 16 community school districts who had been previously excluded.

“Providing a high-quality education to every New York City student starts with our youngest children, and I’m thrilled to expand 3-K for All to reach every district citywide and bring access to thousands of more three-year-olds and their families during this critical time,” said Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter.
