IRS Expected to Push Back Tax Deadline Again this Year until Mid-May

In order to give taxpayers more time to pay their taxes amidst the final stages of the COVID pandemic and tax law changes, the IRS is expected to push back the April 15 tax filing deadline until what may be mid-May, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

Out of consideration for taxpayers who were dealing with the pandemic, last year, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) delayed the tax deadline until July 15.

Many lawmakers would like to provide taxpayers with a little more time. U.S. Rep Richard Neal (D-MA) and U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ), for instance, even contacted the IRS to ask the agency to extend the usual April 15 deadline.

“We stand in the midst of the most important tax filing season in recent memory, and taxpayers cannot get the help they need from the IRS,” Reps. Neal and Pascrell wrote in their joint letter.

“Returns received by the IRS have fallen significantly behind last year’s numbers. On top of all that, once it is signed into law, the American Rescue Plan will change the tax laws applicable to unemployment benefits received in 2020 and reported on returns filed during this filing season.

“Taxpayers need more time to file accurate returns and get their questions answered by the IRS.”
