iOS 14.5 Improves Face ID, but Apple Watch is Necessary

In September 2017, when Apple released its Face ID feature that unlocks iPhones and iPads, the tech giant did not anticipate that in 2020-1, Apple users would be wearing masks that would interrupt devices’ ability to recognize users’ faces.

In April of 2020, Apple updated Face ID so that users who were wearing masks could bypass the facial recognition feature and instead, quickly access keypads that unlocked devices.

Apple users found that update to iOS useful, but many Apple users were still tempted to pull down their masks to allow or Face ID to unlock their phones as quickly as possible.

Today, Apple released a preliminary version of iOS 14.5, which allows users, whether or not they are wearing masks, to unlock their phones just by glancing at them.

The catch is that users must also be wearing an unlocked Apple watch. Now, when Apple users are wearing Apple watches, in addition to carrying iPhones, iOS 14.5 users can use both devices to confer and confirm even mask-wearing users’ identities.

Although Forbes magazine called this system to unlock iPhones and iPads “clever,” the new iOS 14.5 cannot unlock users’ screens for Apple Pay.

“But that’s okay, you see, because you still don’t need to remove your mask as you can pay using Apple Watch, which needs no passcode once it’s on your wrist,” Forbes magazine reported.

Still in its beta stage, iOS 14.5 allows iPhone users to keep their masks in place for other tasks, such as paying for purchases from the App Store or iTunes, or for Safari to autofill a password. Instead of going straight to Face ID, the new software will quickly show the passcode screen, just like earlier versions did.
