Human Cases Of West Nile Virus Found In NYC

By Idy Perl

A few weeks ago, BoroPark24 reported on the measures that the city was taking to control the mosquitoes in Brooklyn that were infected with the West Nile virus.

Now just a few weeks later four cases of West Nile virus have been detected in residents of Queens and Manhattan, with another two possible cases in the Bronx under investigation. Earlier this month two cases was confirmed in Westchester County, marking the first human cases in the US this year.

West Nile virus is difficult to diagnose since it often doesn’t present with any symptoms and most people recover on their own. However, in some rare cases it can cause inflammation to the brain and spinal cord.

Health officials advise residents to use insect repellent spray outdoors, and to ensure that all windows of the home have proper screens. Those who are immunocompromised are advised to avoid being outdoors as much as possible during the evening and early morning when mosquitoes are out.
