Hillel Mozes, Legendary Gabbai at Shomrei Shabbos, Retiring

Boro Park – A legend in Boro Park’s most famous shul for nearly a half century, Hillel Mozes became a worldwide personality as he called out minyanim, announced rides to anywhere in the United States, and distributed warmth and good cheer to hundreds of people every night.

On Wednesday, “Hillel Shammes” announced he was retiring from his position as gabbai of Shomrei Shabbos, the shul on 13th Ave. and 53rd Street that is the local minyan factory.

In an interview with Kol Mevaser, he gave the reason for his withdrawal from public life that he recently turned 70 and was suffering from various ailments. He has been at his stand for over 40 years.
“There won’t be any more Hillel but the world will go on,” he said.

The shul is looking for a replacement, with the job description as being available from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m.
