Greenwood Cemetery Helps Fight Flooding

By Y.M. Lowy
Greenwood Cemetery, a historic cemetery near Boro Park, is now helping prevent flooding in the neighborhood.
With over 478 acres of green space, the cemetery has installed underground water tanks, absorbent roads, and a pond irrigation system to manage stormwater.
These measures aim to reduce runoff into the city’s sewers, helping protect homes and streets from flooding during heavy rains. Funded by over $2 million in grants, the project will manage about 51 million gallons of water annually.
As extreme weather becomes more common, effective stormwater management is necessary to ensure there is no major flooding.
