Green Infrastructure Comes to Boro Park

By Idy Perl
New York City’s Environmental Protection Agency is currently working on building Green Infrastructure around the city to collect stormwater before it enters the sewer system.
Green Infrastructure helps prevent flooding and improve the health of local waterways. Several green infrastructure projects are currently being built around Boro Park, with many more in the works in Brooklyn and other boroughs.
Some of the infrastructure being implemented include rain gardens and infiltration basins, which are gardens designed to absorb rainwater and let it infiltrate into the ground, either directly to the soil or to pipes that feed it elsewhere. Another technique that has been spotted under construction in Boro Park is porous pavement, which is a pavement made of special materials that allow water to seep through and be absorbed into the ground underneath.
