Going Green: Record Number of Solar Panels Installed in NYC

by Meir Sternhill
The sight of solar panels atop roofs in the New York City region is not as uncommon as a few short years ago.
Nearly 10,000 panels that capture energy from the sun have been installed in the city in 2022, the most ever, according to the Consolidated Edison energy company. These projects can produce 89 megawatts of energy that can power 80,000 homes for a year.
Queens led the way with about 3,500 homes getting the solar panels, about 1,500 more than the next largest borough, Brooklyn. In terms of total power produced, Westchester County had the most, at nearly 30 megawatts of clean energy.
Now, ConEd says, more than 50,000 customers in the New York City region have solar panels, producing almost 490 megawatts of energy.
