Garbage Regulations Every Boro Park Resident Needs to Know

By Y.M. Lowy
Many residents turned to BoroPark24, confused after receiving fines for their trash cans from the Department of Sanitation. In response, we reached out to the New York City Department of Sanitation to get a full understanding of the rules and enforcement. DSNY responded, outlining the regulations that every household, building, and business must now follow. Ignorance won’t prevent a fine. Here’s what you need to know:
All trash must be placed in containers with secure lids. This applies to homes, apartment buildings, and businesses.
Bins must be 55 gallons or less and in good condition.
Buildings with 1-9 Units: Trash can go out after 6:00 PM in bins with secure lids.
Buildings with 10+ Units: Trash can go out after 6:00 PM in bins with secure lids or after 8:00 PM if bags are directly on the curb.
The main goal of these measures is to keep rodents and other animals out of the trash, with fines in place for those who don’t comply. The city began enforcing these rules on January 2, 2025, with fines starting at $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second, and $200 for the third and beyond.
Know the rules. Avoid the fines.
