Tempting as it might be to scan a random QR code, according to the Federal Trade Commission's December report, the indecipherable squares are now being utilized to steal personal information, including passwords, logins, and more.
As such, New Yorkers are being warned not to scan random QR codes in unusual places without recognizing their source due to the latest scam technique.
The FTC warned consumers of other QR code scams, including one where scammers cover up legitimate QR codes with a QR code of their own to redirect users so as to steal personal information.
QR codes are also being sent with emails and texts along with the tried and true verbiage, such as the one about a package not being delivered or a bank account on hold due to unusual activity. Those who receive such messages should not click or scan the associated QR codes.
