Fines For MTA Riders Without Face Coverings Begins Monday

Public transit mask mandate begins charging a $50 fine, on Monday, September 14, to riders without face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This new fine is an extension of Governor Andrew Cuomo's executive order, issued in April, requiring all MTA public transit users and employees to wear masks while riding.

Mask compliance on buses is up to 96 percent, and 90 percent on the subway, Long Island Railroad, and Metro-North.

Officials say that by getting more people to comply, more will start riding again.

The MTA police and the NYPD, if they agree to participate, will enforce the fines.
