FEMA to Reimburse Funeral and Burial Costs to Families who Lost Loved Ones to COVID

FEMA to Reimburse Funeral and Burial Costs to Families who Lost Loved Ones to COVID

Among the many ways the $1.8 trillion COVID Relief federal stimulus will help New Yorkers, is the designation of $2 billion to reimburse the funeral and burial costs to Americans who lost loved ones to COVID-19.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is set to launch its reimbursement program on April 1, will provide the funds to anyone who qualifies, although whether income levels or other factors will affect eligibility has yet to be made clear.

One clear point of eligibility, however, is that only the costs for funeral and burials that took place between Jan. 20 and Dec. 31 of 2020 will be reimbursed. Funerals and burials that took place in 2021 are not eligible for FEMA reimbursement.

Though funds provided by the federal stimulus, families who lost loved ones last year may receive reimbursements of up to $7,000 in expenses incurred for COVID-related deaths, although lower amounts may be paid, depending on yet-to-be-announced criteria.

To apply, families will be required to provide original copies of their loved ones’ death certificates, which state or county vital records offices and, sometimes, nursing homes can provide.

In addition, families who apply for funeral and burial reimbursement from the federal government are likely expected to provide detailed documentation of all expenses that were related to the deaths of their loved ones.

Families who are eligible should ensure that they have documented proof of funeral and burial costs in order.
