Feds Bust Smuggling Operation at Detention Center Near Boro Park

Federal officials have charged 25 people in connection with smuggling at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). Among those charged is a former corrections officer who tried to bring illegal items into the jail by hiding them in his protective vest.
U.S. Attorney John Durham said these actions seriously threaten the safety and order of the facility.
The smuggling methods were creative. Five people were charged for working together to throw packages with banned items out a window, where someone outside would pull them back up with a rope. In another case, an inmate tried to sneak his contraband inside a bag of Doritos, hiding them in his shirt during a visit.
These charges show the corruption that has been happening at MDC, and officials are taking action to stop it
