FBI Releases Ads in Yiddish and Hebrew to Encourage Jews to Report Hate Crimes

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released ads in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English to encourage Jews to report hate crimes with greater frequency.

“Did you know many hate crimes are not reported?” the ad reads. “The FBI wants to help, but we need to hear from you. If you believe you are the victim of or a witness to a hate crime, contact your local police department, call 1-800-CALL-FBI, or go to tips.fbi.gov.”

While Jews account for less than 2% of the American population, in November 2020, the FBI reported that more than 60% of religious-based hate crimes in 2019 targeted Jews, which showed a 14% increase over 2018.

The FBI depends on voluntary submissions of data from local law enforcement agencies, so the agency’s hate crime report tells only part of the true story, as 76% of American Jews reported to the American Jewish Committee that they do not report hate crimes. In the FBI’s report last November, for instance, 71 cities with populations of 100,000 residents or more incredulously reported zero hate crimes, or they did not submit any data for the year 2019.
