Famous Sullivan Correctional Facility Shutting Down

By Idy Perl
Two upstate correctional facilities will be shutting their doors.
The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision announced that both the Great Meadow Correctional Facility located in Washington County, and the Sullivan Correctional Facility located in Sullivan County, will close on November 6th.
This decision comes after a full DOCC review of all 44 correctional facilities in New York state. After reviewing the number of prisoners in each location, as well as the functionality of the physical buildings and the areas that had staff shortages, a decision was made to close these prisons. The inmates will be relocated to other prisons, and the employees will be offered jobs at other facilities.
This closure of these prisons is estimated to save the state millions of dollars.
