DSNY to Pick Up Trash on Labor Day

By Yehudit Garmaise

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will be making its rounds to pick up trash on Monday, Labor Day.

Residents who normally receive get their trash picked up on Mondays should place their trash cans at their curbs Sunday, Sept. 4, between 4 pm and midnight, as the DSNY tests out a new program to pick up trash on national holidays.

The DSNY, however, is postponing Monday’s composting and recycling collections.

Residents who normally receive Monday curbside composting collection should place their materials at their curbs between 4 pm and midnight Monday, Sept. 5, for collections beginning the next day, Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Residents who normally get their recycling picked up on Mondays will have to wait until Sunday, Sept. 11, between 4 pm and midnight, to put out their bottles, cans, and other materials that can be picked up for recycling on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The DSNY, which operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, said that while “it strives to offer these services,” residents should remember “that collection delays are common after holidays.

“We appreciate patience as we work to collect the city’s waste materials.”

Residents who have questions about the DSNY services and holiday schedules can call 311 or visit nyc.gov/sanitation.
