DSNY Fines Hundreds of New Yorkers for Improper Compost Disposal

The new rules for trash and compost disposal went into effect in New York City in the month of October, but the city held off on enforcement until April.
While according to DSNY spokespeople, they have seen widespread compliance around the city, since April 1, DSNY enforcement officers doled out hundreds of summonses per day to New Yorkers for impreoperly disposing of compost materials.
Food scraps and other organic waste must be composted in a separate, lid-covered trash can that is no bigger than 55 gallons. The compost will be picked up on the same day as recycling pickup.
