DSNY Enhances Snow Clearance Efforts: What New Yorkers Need to Know

By BoroPark24 Staff
As winter weather continues, the Department of Sanitation announced enhanced snow removal measures to ensure equitable and efficient clearance across the city.
Thanks to historic investments in DSNY, bike lanes will now be serviced alongside car lanes, ensuring all transportation routes remain accessible.
- Modern Tracking with Bladerunner 2.0
DSNY will monitor operations using the advanced Bladerunner 2.0 platform, enabling real-time updates and streamlined coordination. In cases of significant snowfall (2 inches or more), residents can track snow removal vehicles at nyc.gov/PlowNYC.
Reminder: Plowed or salted streets may not show blacktop immediately; this is normal as snow melts gradually.
- Trash and Recycling Collection
There are no changes to trash or recycling schedules or bin requirements.
- Snow Clearing Responsibilities
While DSNY handles streets and bike lanes, property owners must ensure sidewalks are cleared. Key guidelines include:
Do Not Push Snow into Streets or Bike Lanes: This disrupts operations and is illegal. Move snow against the building, to the curb, or onto private property.
Sidewalk Clearance Requirements: Maintain a 4-foot-wide clear path for pedestrians, where possible.
- Clearing Deadlines:
If snow stops falling between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., clear sidewalks within 4 hours.
If snow stops between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., clear sidewalks within 14 hours.
If snow stops between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., clear sidewalks by 11 a.m.
Failure to clear sidewalks may result in fines: $100 for the first offense, $150 for the second, and $250 for the third.
- Alternate Side Parking
Alternate Side Parking is suspended Monday, January 6, for Three Kings’ Day.
