DOT Will Remove “Abandoned” Bikes From NYC Streets

The DOT will soon begin impounding bikes that are deemed “abandoned” on city bike racks. When neighbors report that a bike has been locked up on a city rack for seven days without being used, the DOT will come and remove it.

“Beginning in July, NYC DOT & partners will tag abandoned #BikeNYC to be removed from public bike racks. Abandoned bikes are usable bikes that are locked to a public bike rack for more than seven consecutive days & are different from derelict bikes,” said a Tweet by the DOT.

Bikes that remain locked up, and have a complained filed against them, will be tagged by the DOT. If the tag isn’t removed within seven days, they are liable to be removed by the city and kept at the NYPD stationhouse.
