As we have reported, the city is in the midst of repairing the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, and is seeking ways to preserve it so it doesn’t fall into further disrepair.

Monday, the Department of Transportation announced that it would be strictly enforcing the weight limit of trucks traveling on the BQE.

“Today we announced our first-in-the-nation automated enforcement program targeting overweight trucks on the BQE. It will help reduce wear and tear and preserve the lifespan of the BQE,” a Tweet from the DOT read.

As defined in the legislation, the enforcement program only applies to the City-owned section of the BQE from the vicinity of Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street in Brooklyn.

The program will begin for Queens-bound traffic with a 90-day warning period starting 8/10. At the conclusion of the 90-day warning period for the Queens-bound direction, overweight trucks will be subject to a $650 fine per violation. Installation for the Staten Island-bound direction is anticipated for later this year, with a 90-day warning period to follow.
