DOT Significantly Extends Sidewalks at New Utrecht Avenue

DOT Significantly Extends Sidewalks at New Utrecht Avenue

by YS Gold

The Department of Transportation is in the finishing stages of a sidewalk expansion near the corner of New Utrecht Avenue and 50th Street.

Some of the sidewalks have already seen drastic expansion, while others, at other sides of the oft-confusing intersection—which sees 12th Avenue, New Utrecht Avenue, and 50th Street all converge into one center—will completed in the near term.

This was an effort by the DOT to “remove the unpredictability” from this intersection.

The improvements include an expanded pedestrian island in the center, painted curb extension which create shorter, safer crossings for pedestrians, and a raised crosswalk, which helps reduce speed of passing cars and improves pedestrian visibility.
