DOB to Conduct Spot Checks for Wind Safety

DOB to Conduct Spot Checks for Wind Safety

By Y.M. Lowy

The New York City Department of Buildings has put out a Weather Advisory asking property owners and construction teams to secure their sites and equipment because of strong winds.

The DOB posted the following weather reminder on X, “DOB’s Weather Advisory remains in effect, make sure that all of your sites and properties are secured for high winds. We’ll be performing spot checks to make sure that sites are safe and code compliant.”

The DOB says it’s important to keep construction sites safe during this weather. All loose materials should be tied down so they don’t blow away and cause danger. Cover electrical equipment to keep it protected, and put small tools and items in toolboxes. Make sure scaffolding, sidewalk sheds, and any temporary structures are firmly secured. Crane operations must stop, and cranes should be properly locked down when winds are 30 mph or stronger.

Inspectors from the DOB will be checking construction sites to make sure they are safe and following the rules. If a site isn’t secure, the DOB may issue fines or stop work until the problem is fixed.
