Discovering Little Island: Manhattan’s Floating Garden

Discovering Little Island: Manhattan’s Floating Garden

By Y.M. Lowy

If you’ve ever driven along the West Side Highway in Manhattan and noticed what appears to be a floating garden above the Hudson River, you’ve likely seen Little Island. Supported by concrete stilts shaped like tulip petals, it stands out. You might have wondered what it is or where the paths lead.

Located in the Hudson River, Little Island doesn’t look like a typical city park. Elevated above the water, it creates the impression that it is hovering. While the park is small at just 2.4 acres, its design gives it a sense of depth. It’s not flashy or overwhelming, yet it leaves a lasting impression. For anyone looking to slow down without leaving the city, it’s a spot that’s hard to forget.

Getting there is easy. The island is connected to the mainland park by two pedestrian bridges. Once you arrive, it’s clear that this place was designed for exploration. The paths wind, some flat and some sloping, surrounded by plantings. Over 350 varieties of flowers and trees fill the landscape, constantly changing with the seasons.

Before it became the beloved Little Island, the site was known as Pier 54, a historic pier along the Hudson River. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, causing a large amount of damage to Pier 54. In 2014, plans were unveiled to transform the damaged pier into a modern park, which would later be named Little Island.

From a distance, it might look like unusual architecture. But up close, it’s a small piece of nature right in the heart of the city.
