Declutter Diaries: Accessories, Jewelry, & Makeup

By Y.M. Lowy

Welcome back to Declutter Diaries! This week, we’re tackling the little things like accessories, jewelry, and makeup. When everything has a place, getting ready feels effortless, and you make use of everything you own.

Organize This:

Jewelry Organization: If you wear a few essential pieces daily, a desktop jewelry dish works perfectly to keep them organized and accessible. For larger collections, use a tray with compartments to store rings, necklaces, and earrings neatly, giving it a “jewelry store” look and preventing tangling.

Makeup Organization: Sort your makeup by everyday use, Shabbos makeup (if applicable), and special occasion makeup. Use small containers to group similar items, like lipsticks or eyeshadows, to keep everything organized and easily accessible. Stackable makeup drawers are great for expanding your storage as your collection grows, with each item having a designated spot. For messy makeup brushes, a brush organizer will keep powders from mixing and ensure your brushes look neat.

Accessories Organization: For a small collection of accessories like beanies, scarves, and belts, a bin with organizers keeps everything visible and compact. Organize your sunglasses by keeping only the pairs you wear regularly and storing them in a case to avoid clutter and damage.

One-Item Purge Challenge:

Get rid of belts that are out of style. If it’s not adding to your look, it’s time to let it go.

Myth Buster:

Myth: Expensive makeup is always better than drugstore makeup.

Reality: Price doesn’t always equal quality. Many drugstore brands offer products with the same or even superior formulations compared to high-end brands. The key is choosing products based on ingredients and your specific skin needs, not just the price tag.

Did You Know?

In the 1700s, European women sought a pale complexion as a symbol of wealth and high status, leading many to use white lead in their makeup. This toxic substance was often mixed into face powders and creams to create a flawless, pale appearance; effects like lead poisoning were unknown at the time.

How Do You Do It?

Do you have a collection of costume jewelry to match every outfit, or do you stick to a few timeless, high-quality pieces?
