Cuomo Announces Restaurants to Open at 35% Next Week, Opens 11 COVID Testing Sites

    By Yehudit Garmaise

This morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that in one week, restaurants in New York City can open at 35% capacity.

People in New York City are going to restaurants in New Jersey, where they are open at 35%, so the restrictions don’t make sense here, said Gov. Cuomo, who happily said that COVID positivity and hospitalization rates continue to decline.

The governor said that he could keep gauging to the COVID positivity rates and hospital rates to decide at what rate to re-open New York’s economy.

“The numbers are all going down, so we are slowly reopening,” Gov. Cuomo said. “If those numbers change, we change.”

The governor also said that reopening the economy will be accelerated by more testing, so he announced the opening of 11 rapid testing sites New York City today.

“Those sites are open right now, they cost less than $30, and they takes 30 minutes or less,” Gov. Cuomo said. “The tests are FDA-approved antigen tests."

“When a person is tested negative, you can reopen,” said the governor who said that he recently had to take a COVID test before visiting President Joe Biden.

“I got to visit the president,” the governor said. “Why? Because I took a COVID test and was negative.

“Similarly, when New Yorkers test negative, they should be able to see a movie or a play.”

In addition to speeding up the process of reopening the economy, the governor said that increased testing can ease New Yorkers’ pandemic worries.

“Everyone wants to know, ‘Do I have COVID?  Am I infectious?’ The tests will give people piece of mind,” said the governor, who added that the testing sites will be a big advantage for the state of New York. “Let’s accelerate that period of time prior to reaching herd immunity when everyone has a vaccine,” a time is probably months away.
