Crime Down Citywide - Robberies and Shootings Up Though

According to the NYPD accounting of crime statistics from the month of May, there was a net decrease in index crime by 21.2% as compared to May 2019. However, despite the decrease in major index crimes, there was an increase in shootings, murders, auto theft, and burglary.

As one effort to combat the rise in violent crime, the NYPD is once again deploying the "Summer All-Out" initiative which brings hundreds of extra officers out on the streets in uniform. This previously successful program has served as an effective crime suppression strategy in the past.

“I am proud of our police officers who have met the challenges of these trying times with remarkable fortitude and fairness,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis said on twitter, "Comparing the crime stats in #NYC from this past month to same time last year...But de Blasio, AOC and other radicals will say we are the “safest big city” and it’s ok to defund the #NYPD. It’s not."
