Coney Island Set for Major Upgrades

Everyone loves spending a summer day in Coney Island, whether it’s strolling the boardwalk, enjoying the beach, or taking the kids to the amusement park. It’s a place filled with memories for so many of us, and now, big changes are on the way. The city is planning a major transformation for the neighborhood, bringing 1,500 mixed-income homes, upgrading the iconic Riegelmann Boardwalk, and renovating the Abe Stark Sports Center.
Mayor Eric Adams announced the plans on Thursday, saying the goal is to make Coney Island a better place to live, work, and play. “Coney Island’s best days still lie ahead. Today, we started the next chapter in its bright future,” Adams said.
The Abe Stark Sports Center will undergo a $42 million renovation, bringing a new entrance, better ice-skating facilities, and other improvements to make it more accessible and modern. At the same time, the Riegelmann Boardwalk, a landmark that locals say needs serious repairs, will be reconstructed to improve accessibility and withstand rising sea levels.
